After patiently waiting for Netflix to renew “Stranger Things” for a Season 2, fans can now rejoice in officially knowing that there will be more episodes of the critically acclaimed, ’80s-inspired series.
Created by Matt and Ross Duffer, the first season mesmerized fans with its outstanding cast and creative storylines that paid homage to (and reminded fans) of classics like “E.T.,” “The Goonies,” and many other Steven Spielberg films.

For those who have already binge-watched the series, at the end of Season 1, Will was safely back with his family and Eleven sacrificed her life to save her friends from the Demogorgon and to close the portal. We’re not totally convinced that was the end of the beloved character and have a feeling she will come back. Wanting answers, Entertainment Weekly spoke with theDuffer Brothers to get some scoop on Season 2.
Here are five secrets they revealed.
1. They story will be a continuation of what audiences saw and not an anthology.
“I don’t think we ever thought anthology,” said Ross Duffer. “I think we talked like a larger time jump where the kids are older now and it’s a different decade. That’s something we batted around from the very beginning. But for us, there’s still more story here [in the 1980s], there’s still things that are unresolved.”
2. The new episodes will take them out of Hawkins, Indiana.
“We will venture a little bit outside of Hawkins,” said Matt Duffer. “I will say the opening scene [of the premiere] does not take place in Hawkins.”
3. James Cameron’s work inspired Season 2.
“I know movie sequels get a lot of s**t, but the ones we look up to aspire to pivot and do something different,” explained Matt. “There’s ‘Temple of Doom,’ ‘Aliens,’ ‘Terminator 2.’ I guess a lot of this is James Cameron. But he’s brilliant. And I think one of the reasons his sequels are as successful as they are is he makes them feel very different without losing what we loved about the original. So I think we kinda looked to him and what he does and tried to capture a little bit of the magic of his work.”
4. Audiences will return to the Upside Down.
“We kinda just peeled back the curtain and revealed a tiny bit of the Upside Down,” stated Matt. “So we definitely want to explore a little bit more. There’s a lot we don’t know about the Upside Down at the end of Season 1.”
Ross added, “We obviously have this gate to another dimension, which is still very much open in the town of Hawkins. And a lot of questions there in terms of, if the Monster is dead, was it a singular monster? What else could be out there? We really don’t go in there much until they go in to find Will at the end. So we’ve opened up this doorway, and to us it’s exciting to talk about, like, what else is behind there? There’s a lot more mystery there to be solved.”
5. Some characters are returning and we will meet new ones.
“There’s going to be a lot of new and interesting dynamics that we didn’t see in Season 1,” explained Matt, revealing that there will be four new characters. We already know that Barb (Shannon Purser) won’t be returning to Season 2 – but will not be forgotten – and that Brenner (Matthew Modine), who we last saw being attacked by the monster, might not be dead. For the most part, the entire cast will reprise their roles but what about fan favorite Millie Bobby Brown?
“We don’t know about Eleven,” said Ross. “We leave that up in the air.”
Season 2 of “Stranger Things” will return sometime in 2017.
