The “Game of Thrones” Winterfell castle may be home to the ruler of the North, but it is also the inspiration for a Russian cement factory, which is recreating the expansive gray fortress in fast setting cement at the Yekaterinburg Cement Factory in central Russia.
The castle will be constructed with the help of a 3D-printer, with cement poured around sections of steel frame from a giant industrial-size version of the printer, per The Hollywood Reporter.
“Ultimately, it will be a watchtower, but instead of warriors and knights there will be security,” said the factory boss Rinat Brilin in an article for Interfax.
The castle, home of the House Stark, will be used as a local attraction and as advertisement for using new technology to create concrete frames for homes. It also is an innovative and fun way to show the uses of industrial 3D technology.
“Why this castle?” factory boss Rinat Brilin told the television stationTelekanal 360. “First of all, it is, in my view, very beautiful. And it also demands the use of many new technologies to construct that simpler buildings don’t require.”
As massive as the castle is, the Yekaterinburg project takes just three workers, including the computer programmer whose job is to ensure that the layers of liquid concrete are accurately placed. Brilin stated that the project should be completed by the end of September.
