Movies on the Telly: Our picks for the week ahead
If you're not off down in Stradbally for Electric Picnic, there's a good chance you'll be curled up in front of the television and fighting off FOMO as much as possible.
Don't worry, there's more than a few options for your TV this weekend and the week ahead.
Saturday
Lone Survivor
Channel 4: 9.00pm
Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster and Emile Hirsch star in this war drama about a group of Navy SEALs who are ambushed by Taliban fighters in the depths of Afghanistan after a mission goes wrong. Ably directed by Peter Berg, Lone Survivor is a decent enough film, but does suffer from more than a few 'murica moments throughout. Worth a watch for the excellent action sequences, though.
Monday
Alexander
TG4: 9.30pm
We've got to hand it to whoever programs the films for TG4 on a Monday. There really has been some really interesting choices and, sure enough, Oliver Stone's take on Alexander The Great is just that - interesting. Sure, it's not the best film you're ever going to see, but it's a fascinating if messy watch. Also, keep an eye out for the sadly departed Mick Lally in a small cameo role and you can also laugh at Val Kilmer's faux-Irish accent.
Tuesday
Catch Me If You Can
RTE2: 9.00pm
For our money, the funnest and slickest film that Senor Spielbergo's made since Raiders Of The Lost Ark, the '60s-set Catch Me If You Can is a wildly entertaining romp with fantastic interplay between Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. John Williams' light and jazzy score, the beautiful cinematography and a cracking story to boot, it's a brilliant little film. Make time and watch it.
