September marks the beginning of the fall movie season, and while that means critical darlings and awards contenders are on their way, it’d be a shame to overlook some of the most winning films that have already hit the big screen this year. One of those is Lorene Scafaria’s mother-daughter comedy “The Meddler,” which was an indie hit back in the spring but could stand to use a few more eyeballs. Starring Susan Sarandon in one of her best roles ever, the story concerns Marnie Minervini, a recent California transplant who has upended her own life to move closer to her daughter, who is dealing with her own big-time issues. J.K. Simmons and Rose Byrne co-star.
In her B+ review of the film, Indiewire’s Film Editor Kate Erbland raves, “‘The Meddler’ doesn’t try for over-the-top shows of affection, instead opting for the kind of warmth and charm we don’t see nearly enough of on the big screen, alongside two generous and well-rounded roles for its leading ladies.”
Before the crunch of awards season heats up, make sure to give “The Meddler” a go on VOD. You won’t regret. Watch Erbland make a further case for the film in the video below.
