‘The Long Excuse’ Exclusive Trailer: Miwa Nishikawa’s TIFF Feature Builds a Family Drama from Tragedy
The film stars Masahiro Motoki as a widow coming to terms with his grief.

Miwa Nishikawa is no stranger to the Toronto International Film Festival, her last film, “Dream for Sale,” was screened at the festival in 2012. Now, the Japanese director and screenwriter is back at TIFF this year with her latest picture “The Long Excuse,” based on her novel of the same name.
The drama stars Masahiro Motoki as Sachio Kinugasa, a popular writer who is widowed after his wife (Eri Fukatsu) dies in a bus accident. Coming to terms with his grief, or lack of it, he offers to take care of another man’s children who also lost their mother in the same incident.
The film will be screened at TIFF on Saturday, September 17 and 18 and IndieWire has an exclusive new trailer that you can check out below.
“The Long Excuse” is executive produced by Kazumi Kawashiro, Yasuhito Nakae, Tetsuo Ota, Shuichi Nagasawa, Kiyoto Matsui and Takashi Iwamura. Producers include Asako Nishikawa and Akihiko Yose.
Motoki is best known for his role in the 2008 Oscar-winning film “Departures,” which took home the Best Foreign Language Film statuette. Since then he’s appeared in features such as “The Emperor in August” and “The Big Bee.”
Nishikawa is on the forefront of growing contemporary female Japanese filmmakers, working with acclaimed auteur Kore-eda Hirokazu before venturing on her own and collaborating with him on her first film “Wild Berries” (2003). From there she has directed “Fîmeiru,” “Sway” and “Dear Doctor,” among others.
