President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, in collaboration withSXSW, are throwing a special one-day event for creators and innovators called South by South Lawn. After both spoke at the festival in Austin, Texas in March, the trip inspired the Obama administration to host their own miniature version at the White House.
The one-day festival will take place on October 3 and include all three elements of the annual event: Interactive, Film and Music. There will be panel discussions, short student films and live performances that “will bring together creators, innovators, and organizers who work day in and day out to improve the lives of their fellow Americans and people around the world,” per the official White House statement.
According to the White House page, the film portion features the 3rd Annual White House Student Film Festival in association with its founding partner, the American Film Institute.
“Students in grades K-12 submitted more than 700 short films round this year’s theme, The World I Want to Live In. The submissions are inspiring and we’re excited to share official selections and honor young filmmakers as part of this event.”
The organizers are accepting online nominations of who should attend the festival up until September 10 at 5pm.
